Book Signing: “When Gay People Get Married” HRC Back Story by Ché Ruddell-Tabisola October 20, 2009
LeeBookSigningDr. M.V. Lee Badgett read excerpts
from and signed copies of her latest book, When Gay
People Get Married: What Happens When Societies
Legalize Same-Sex Marriage, Friday morning at the
Human Rights Campaign building.
Dr. Badgett has dedicated her life to improving
the lives of LGBT families by shining a spotlight on
the economic inequities, injustices and
discriminations they face everyday but are difficult
to prove. In her first book, Money, Myths, and
Change: The Economic Lives of Lesbians and Gay Men,
she presented groundbreaking work debunking the myth
of gay affluence.
In When Gay People Get Married, Dr. Badgett went
beyond the numbers to explore the lives of same-sex
couples in a land where it’s been legal to marry
since 2001: the Netherlands. In her interviews Dr.
Badgett discovers marriage has affected their lives
in some surprising ways, and finds unexpected
changes in their relationships with each other as
well as in the relationships with their families and
friends.
