This year the seminar will focus on issues of diversity and identity in the entertainment and media industries and potential legal interventions.  We will consider, for instance, the use of race and sex in the casting of actors and its Title VII and First Amendment implications, the California Supreme Courts recent rejection of a sexual harassment claim arising from the writers room on the set of the TV show Friends, and the news medias perpetuation of racial stereotyping by promoting crime-related stores.  We will also engage in an extended dialogue with entertainment industry professionals on obstacles to diversity, and with their assistance, we will devise a set of interventions for beginning to overcome these institutionalized barriers to access.  It is recommended that students have a general familiarity with basic entertainment and media industry practices and law.
