This seminar will emphasize major works of American political thought, though it may include works by Europeans on politics and rhetoric that have influenced the American political tradition. Though some contemporary works may be included, emphasis will be on classics such as the Federalist and speeches of Abraham Lincoln. The classes will be largely conducted in a conversation format in which students are expected to play a large part in bringing up points for discussion. Therefore, students who enroll in the seminar should be committed to studying the works carefully and closely prior to the class meetings. Students will be evaluated on the basis of class participation and written work.
