PROCEDURE FOR REQUESTING ALTERNATE DATES
OR WORK SCHEDULE
Externs must engage in the program on a full-time basis from the first day of the semester until the last day of the semester, unless other dates have been established by the school for a particular semester. If any dates other than those set by the school are requested by the agency or judge, the student MUST submit a written request to the Externship Director, Susan Gillig, for approval well in advance of the start date of the externship. Date changes will not be permitted unless this procedure is followed.
In addition, externs must comply with normal working hours and conditions of the host-agency or chambers. In some instances the work may require more than the standard 40-hour work week and externs are expected to devote additional time to their work. Any deviation from the above work schedule requires prior approval by the Externship Office. Any request for a deviation must be proposed by the agency or judge and NOT the student. This includes deviations from the scheduled dates for the semester, or any work schedule that is not based on a standard 5-day, 40-hour work week. A written request for an alternate work schedule should include a statement from the supervisor showing how this will supplement or facilitate the learning experience for the extern. For instance, if the office is actually closed and/or there is no supervision for the extern during certain times, this would be a compelling reason to alter the schedule. The written request shall be submitted to the Externship Director for approval well in advance of the start date of the externship.
