Our Programs and Activities

Research and Policy Reform

The Lowell Milken Institute is setting the agenda for research and policy reform through targeted initiatives that tackle the most pressing problems in business law and policy. These initiatives result in conferences that bring leading figures to the campus and in publications that reach academics, legal practitioners, the business community and policy-makers. Consistent with a spirit of collaboration and cooperation, the institute regularly partners with others to enhance the impact of its work. For example, the annual NYU-UCLA Tax Policy Symposium rotates between Los Angeles and New York, reaching two key hubs of business activity. The institute publicizes the results of its research through various outlets, including its own white papers. The proceedings of the annual Tax Policy Conference are published in the prestigious Tax Law Review.

Curricular Innovation

The Lowell Milken Institute is dedicated to ensuring that the business law and policy curriculum remains in the vanguard of innovative approaches to legal education. In undertaking this effort, the institute presumes that lawyers who work in the corporate world require broad-based expertise. To ensure that fullness of perspective, the program of study combines theory with real-world opportunities for students to explore the intersection of law and business. Students are prepared for a sophisticated practice in a wide range of areas, including bankruptcy, corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, securities regulation, finance, commercial law and taxation. Graduates master the skills necessary to adapt to a changing legal marketplace, to identify emerging areas of economic opportunity and for those who choose to pursue alternatives to practice, to make the transition to leadership positions in business, the nonprofit sector and philanthropy.

Curriculum

The Business Law and Policy Specialization is designed for students who wish to focus their schooling in a particular area of business law and ultimately earn a certificate of completion with their J.D. Students may choose from five tracks: Business Law, Bankruptcy, Mergers and Acquisitions, Securities Regulation and Taxation.

For the student who wants to be prepared for transactional practice at the highest level, the Business Law and Policy Specialization offers an unparalleled opportunity, producing lawyers who combine legal analysis with a thorough understanding of the business client’s goals and challenges and the tools necessary to meet the client's needs.

Our faculty recognizes that successful business lawyers do not just advise on the law. They help their clients structure, negotiate and execute their transactions. To do so effectively, lawyers must understand not only the basics of business, but also the business purpose and context of the transactions in which they are involved. Too many young lawyers discover this only after graduation, but the Business Law and Policy Specialization gives aspiring business lawyers a head start by providing them with a broad perspective on the issues likely to be encountered in their future legal and business careers and the skills necessary for effective transactional lawyering.
