CLINICAL COURSES
During their second and third years of law school, students are normally permitted to undertake a total of two clinical courses or one clinical course and one externship. Two clinical courses may be taken during the same semester, however, students may enroll in only one clinical course during the first enrollment pass. Should a student be in two clinical classes after first pass ends, the Records Office will drop the second clinical the student enrolled in before the second pass begins. Students enrolled in such a 3rd clinical course at any time before the start of the course will be automatically dropped from that clinical by the Records Office before the first class. Note that enrollment into clinical courses that require instructor consent will be processed during the first enrollment pass. If there are any remaining spaces after the first enrollment pass, students then may enroll in a second clinical course. See the
Summary of Academic Standardsfor specific regulations. Clinical courses are in high demand, therefore, students should attempt to enroll in these courses during the first pass to maximize their chances for enrollment.
EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM
UCLA has an extensive, well-established and diversified student externship program. Students can work either as an extern law clerk to a federal judge or in one of our agency externships at a government agency, public interest law firm, a non-profit organization or in some circumstances with in-house counsel. Students may take externships either for a full semester during their 4th or 5th semester or on a part-time basis during their 2nd and 3rd year, but not both. Students on a full-time externship receive 11 units of P/U/NC credit for the placement portion of the externship and an additional 2 units of graded credit for a concurrent tutorial or seminar. Such students receive a small reduction in the Materials Fee (one of the mandatory registration fees). Students on a part-time externship receive between 2 and 4 units of P/U/NC credit, depending on the number of hours worked at the placement.
