Want to have a voice in what goes on here at the law school? The Student Bar Association is looking for enthusiastic students who will serve on a variety of Student-Faculty Committees and SBA Committees (made up exclusively of students). These committees may include:
I. STUDENT-FACULTY COMMITTEES
(A) BUSINESS LAW COMMITTEE
Students appointed to this committee will provide recommendations regarding the structure and policies of the Business Law Program and will be personally involved in the decision-making process of the committee. The committee needs ONE student who is currently in the Business Law Program (thus, only 2Ls and 3Ls are eligible).
(B) CLERKSHIP AND TEACHING COMMITTEE
This committee seeks to encourage UCLA law students to pursue postgraduate clerkships and explore academic careers. The committee needs ONE student, preferably a 1L or 2L.
(C) LIBRARY AND TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE
The student appointed to this committee will provide student input regarding the information services system (e.g., the e-mail system). The committee needs TWO students, and a background in computers or technology is NOT required although it may be useful.
(D) TECHNOLOGY STUDENT ADVISORY GROUP
This committee will meet approximately once a month for lunch with Sean Pine to discuss issues related to technology, including but not limited to: the e-mail system, the dial up system (LawNet), the student computer labs, and ExamSoft software. We are looking for about FOUR students from all class levels, who will be a range of computer users and non-users, so please specify on your application whether you have a computer at home, whether you use a lap-top in class, etc. (Please note that there are already two students on this committee who were appointed at the end of last year.)
(E) EXTERNAL APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE
Students appointed to this committee will assist in the interviewing process for new faculty candidates. This will involve interviewing candidates and writing recommendations to the Faculty Appointments Committee, but will not involve actually voting for such candidates. The committee needs TWO students. (Please note that there is already one student on this committee who was appointed at the end of last year.)
(F) EXTERNSHIP COMMITTEE
The student appointed to this committee will provide student input in the approval process for new externship programs. The committee needs ONE student.
(G) PUBLIC INTEREST COMMITTEE
This committee addresses issues facing the Public Interest Law and Policy Program, and student members will provide input and recommendations regarding the Program. The committee needs THREE students who are current members of the Program, one from each class year.
(H) STANDARDS COMMITTEE
This committee is the initial reviewing body for student petitions of waiver of academic procedures and for any requests involving law school policies and academic standards. This committee needs ONE mature student with good judgment and discretion, preferably a 2L or 3L. The committee meets on as as-needed basis, more frequently than other committees. It will also be taking last year’s Standards Committee’s recommendations concerning exam policies (rules about take-home exams, etc.) to the faculty this year. (Please note that there is already one student on this committee who was appointed at the end of last year.)
(I) CAREER SERVICES COMMITTEE
This committee deals with career services and basically anything related to the forums, job fairs, mock interviews, panels, and various other opportunities offered by the Office of Career Services. This committee needs TWO students.
II. SBA STUDENT COMMITTEES
(A) ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
The SBA is looking for ONE OR MORE students to chair the new Academic Affairs committee. This committee will have the responsibility of dealing with student concerns and complaints about any academic issues (such as cheating, the curve, the curriculum, class rankings, etc.). Committee tasks may include polling students, obtaining information from faculty and administrators, and drafting position statements to be considered by the SBA Rep Council.
(B) SOCIAL COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS
The Social Committee is the SBA committee in charge of putting on social events for the law school community. We are looking for TWO Co-Chairs who are creative, organized, and willing to explore new options for social events. This can range from “keg-n-courtyard” to “beach Saturday” to “bowling night” to “study hall Wednesday” to “snowboarding weekend” to “snack-times”, etc. The Co-Chairs must be willing to: make flyers, work with the Secretary to publicize events, consider the opinions of all committee members, and organize events throughout the school year, not just in the fall. It would also be helpful if at least one of the chairs had a car (in order to make picking up supplies, etc. easier).
(C) COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE
The SBA is looking for TWO OR MORE students to chair this committee. Its purpose will be to help give back to a world that has given so much to us. These past couple of years SBA has been able to do a lot of work with the law school community and now we are going to add to our focus the outside community. This committee will be responsible for planning two community service projects. One project will be community based, i.e. Habitat for Humanity, helping out at a soup kitchen, inner city school clean-up etc. The other project will be environmentally based, i.e. Heal the Bay, etc. These committee chairs must be very organized, creative, and great at networking and publicity. These activities will be for current UCLAW students, administration, faculty and staff, as well as alumni.
(D) ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS
The Environmental Affairs Committee will be charged with researching and providing recommendations regarding environmental concerns within the law school, such as more effective recycling programs. The TWO Co-Chairs will organize the committee, hold meetings when necessary, and report to the SBA.
(E) BARRISTERS' BALL CO-CHAIRS
We are looking for students who are interested in organizing the Barrister’s Ball, an annual semi-formal dance that brings the entire law school community together. The TWO Co-Chairs must be willing to meet with other student groups in order to meet the needs of all students. The Co-Chairs must be good at igniting interest and fundraising early for the event in order to make the task not as challenging as the date approaches. Additionally, the chairs must be good managers, adept at delegating the numerous tasks required to make the event happen.
(F) YEARBOOK CO-EDITORS
We are looking for TWO Co-Editors who are organized, inventive, and willing to reinvent the wheel. The yearbook has not been around consistently for some time, however if you would like to rekindle your creative abilities this is your opportunity. This can even be a place for both photos and poetic memories. It is being reinvented so do with it what you like, within reason.
(G) ELECTION RULES COMMITTEE
We are looking for FOUR students (including one from each class year) who are interested in reviewing the SBA’s election rules and providing recommendations regarding possible changes. This is a brand new committee and thus we are looking for creative individuals who can work without a framework.
Please contact your Student Bar Association at sba@lawnet.ucla.edufor more information and for instructions on how you may apply.
*NOTE: Membership on each of the seven SBA Committees is open to all interested students. Those who apply but are not selected for these leadership positions will be asked to join the committee of their choice. We appreciate your interest and encourage you to be involved in your law school.
