This seminar will explore complex issues in medical ethics and law that fall under the broad umbrella of "reproduction." Topics include: sterilization, gamete donation, high-tech baby-making, embryos and divorce, abortion, civil liberties during pregnancy, birth in America, conflict in the neonatal intensive care unit, and defining parenthood. We will explore how the institutions of law and medicine - as well as society itself - have sought to resolve these dilemmas. Course materials will include: articles from newspapers, magazines, medical journals, and law reviews; excerpts from books, casebooks, and court cases; and television news broadcasts.
