Graphic novels use a combination of text and artwork to communicate their message. These are not comic books in the pejorative sense of being thinly scripted, poorly thought, action-only thrillers. They are instead works that have significant kinship to traditional literature, and their substance can easily run the gamut from history and biography to political commentary and fantasy. In this reading seminar, we will read ten well-regarded graphic novels, each chosen in part for its implicit or explicit message about law, political structure or social structure.
Meetings will occur throughout the year, on Sunday evenings, from 5:30 pm to 8pm. We’ll meet at my home (near Beverly Glen & Mulholland) and talk over dinner. Planned session dates are 9/18, 10/16, 1/22, 2/5, 3/5.
