This year-long seminar is designed for advanced law students who wish to develop and complete a full-length, high-quality legal article (or “comment”) of publishable quality in a collaborative setting (sometimes known as a “writing circle”). The seminar will meet every other week for the entire academic year, and students will work together with each other and with the professor to identify, develop, and refine topics; and then to organize, draft, edit, and fine-tune a piece with an eye toward dissemination to a wide audience. The collaborative process will also include peer editing, pursuant to guidelines that will be jointly determined. Enrollment, by application, is limited to a maximum of 12.
While the seminar is focused on the academic writing process, students who are also seeking subject matter support for their research should be aware that the professor’s primary areas of expertise are Education Law, Technology Law, Privacy Law (online & offline), and Disability Rights. Given the highly interdisciplinary nature of these courses, however, the relevant material in this context necessarily encompasses a broad range of current topics and additional subject matter, including but not limited to Employment Law, First Amendment, Fourteenth Amendment, IP, and International Law. Given the availability of additional faculty support, students interested in other areas are also encouraged to apply.
The legal article that is completed for this seminar will satisfy the law school’s SAW writing requirement, and the seminar is open to all second and third-year students and all LLMs.
