UCLA School of Law does not offer any summer session or study abroad programs. UCLA law students who wish to enroll in summer courses at another ABA-accredited law school may do so as advised below.

Guide to Receiving Credit for Summer Study Abroad
Students wishing to earn credit at UCLA Law School for summer session attendance elsewhere must first submit their proposed summer program, including course descriptions and course meeting schedule, to Pei Pei Tan in the Records Office for evaluation and approval. Any changes in curriculum or student status that occur following the initial approval of the program must immediately be communicated to him for reevaluation so that the appropriate amount of credit may be awarded. Summer school credit may be earned only by attending a law school accredited by the Association of American Law Schools. Students attending summer session at another law school may not repeat courses previously taken and completed at UCLA School of Law. This is especially true if the student received the grade of "D+" or below when the course was initially taken here. Similarly, courses taken and completed in summer session at another law school may not be repeated at UCLA School of Law in subsequent regular session semesters.

Students participating in summer study must turn in their final transcripts to the Records Office by the end of the following semester. Failure to do so will result in a Hold being placed on all registrar services (e.g. enrolling in Spring Semester classes, posting of grades, release of transcripts) until the Records Office receives the student's summer study transcript. Summer session courses must be taken for a letter grade (or the equivalent), and the grade of "C-" or better is required to receive units and proportional residency credit toward the Juris Doctor degree. In those cases where a student receives a grade below a "C-", the grade will be treated by the law school as the grade of "F" for all purposes (i.e., unit and residency credit, transcripts, grade point average, retention, and Order of the Coif).

All summer session course work, including actual grades earned, will appear on your UCLA School of Law transcript. However, grades of "C-" and above will have no impact on your UCLA School of Law grade point average whereas grades below a "C-" will have a negative impact on your grade point average as indicated above. An official transcript showing all course work undertaken and grades received must be sent from the school hosting the summer session program to UCLA School of Law at:

The amount of transferable unit credit is based on the actual number of minutes of course instruction: 700 minutes of instruction = 1 unit.

The amount of transferable residency credit will normally be determined according to the following rules:

1. The summer school student who undertakes 12 or more academic hours (or ten, 60-minute hours) of in-class study per week in a summer school term lasting 15 or more consecutive weeks and who receives grades of "C-" or better in 9 or more of them shall receive a full semester of residency credit.

2. The summer school student who undertakes 12 or more academic hours (or ten, 60 minute hours) of in-class study per week in a summer school term lasting 15 or more consecutive weeks and who receives a grade of "C-" or better in X hours, where X is less than 9 hours, shall receive X/9ths of a semester's residency credit.

3. The summer school student who undertakes 12 or more academic hours (or ten, 60 minute hours) of in-class study per week in a summer school lasting Y weeks, where Y is less than 15 or more consecutive weeks, and who receives the grade of "C-" or better in at least 9 hours of such work, shall receive Y/15ths of a semester's residency credit.

If a student has received the letter grade of "F" in only one (1) course in any regular session semester, s/he may make up any resulting residency deficiency by attending a summer session at another law school accredited by the AALS, without enrolling for 12 fifty minute class hours (or ten, 60 minute hours) of work per week. In such cases and assuming that the grade of "C" or better is received in such work, residence credit will be awarded in the ratio that the number of units of course credit earned a (as calculated above) at the other school bears to a constant denominator of 12. This option may not be used to cure more than one semester's residency deficiency.
