Thomas Holm directs the first-year Lawyering Skills Clinical Program, a course focusing on practice-oriented legal analysis, legal research, legal writing, and clinical skills. As Director, Professor Holm is responsible for curriculum development, and for training new and junior faculty regarding effective teaching methods. He teaches Lawyering Skills and the Writing Advisor Seminar, an advanced legal writing course that is associated with the Program. An accomplished instructor, Professor Holm received the University's Distinguished Teaching Award for Lecturers in just his fourth year of teaching.
During law school, Professor Holm was Note & Comment Editor for the University of Minnesota Law Review, was elected to The Order of the Coif, and received the ABA's Edward J. Devitt Scholarship for excellence in trial advocacy. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable Arthur L. Alarcon of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Professor Holm subsequently practiced at the law firm of Morrison & Foerster, where he specialized in insurance coverage and bank regulatory matters.
Professor Holm served on the LexisNexis Legal Research and Writing Advisory Board, and wrote and edited several chapters for the first and second editions of LexisNexis’ Lessons in Legal Research: A Manual for Instructors. He lectures nationally to prospective law students on legal research, legal writing, and exam-taking skills. He also currently serves as a consultant to law firms, where he provides extensive workshops on legal writing and legal research.
