Kenneth Karst is a nationally known constitutional law scholar and fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The principles and values of equality are the central focus of his work. He has delivered invited lectures at fourteen universities around the country. He won the University's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1980, the School of Law's Rutter Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1994, and has been elected twice by graduating classes as Professor of the Year.
Before joining the School of Law, Professor Karst taught at Ohio State for seven years.
Professor Karst is the author of numerous books and articles, including Law's Promise, Law's Expression: Visions of Power in the Politics of Gender, Race and Religion (1993) and Belonging to America: Equal Citizenship and the Constitution (1989), which received the James A. Rawley Prize from the American Organization of Historians for "the best book on race relations in the United States." He is co-editor of the Encyclopedia of the American Constitution (2nd ed., 2000).
