JELP Co-Sponsors 2009 Working Conference on Nanotech Regulatory Policy
The 2009 Working Conference on Nanotech Regulatory Policy brought together an interdisciplinary group of scholars and researchers, policymakers, non-governmental organizations, and businesses for action-oriented workshop panels on the science and policy of nanotechnology. The goal of the Conference was to critically evaluate several specific policy proposals for responding to the potential public health and environmental impacts of nanotechnology. Specifically, the Conference examined three categories of policy responses through several panels:
- Reliance on existing regulatory programs (with or without amendment)
- Development of innovative “nano-specific” regulatory program
- Reliance upon “private” regulation (e.g., industry initiatives, etc.) The policy proposals were set out in a series of succinct draft papers commissioned by the Conference sponsors and discussed in depth in the panels. The authors are now in the process of taking what they learned from the conference and incorporating it into final papers, which will be published in the UCLA Journal of Environmental Law and Policy in early 2010.
