UCLA Journal of Islamic and Near Eastern Law
CALL FOR PAPERS
The UCLA Journal of Islamic and Near Eastern Law (JINEL), the first law school journal of its kind in the country, is currently seeking contributions for the 1st issue of its 8th volume, to be published in the Fall of 2008. JINEL's goal is to emphasize and critically analyze all legal issues—social, political, civil, historical, economic and commercial—that are of particular relevance to Muslims and Near Easterners in both Muslim and non-Muslim societies. JINEL is also concerned with the theoretical aspects of Islamic law and jurisprudence. Although we would like to stress that all articles related to Islamic or Near Eastern law are welcome, for this issue, the board of JINEL is particularly interested the following topics:
- Issues dealing with the events of September 11th and their effects on Muslims and Middle Easterners both in the Middle East and internationally, (chiefly the effects or potential effects of post-9/11 U.S. anti-terrorism laws, policies and programs). Jurisprudential aspects of these events and their relevance to Islamic Law are sought after.
- Issues related to Islamic Finance and Banking.
- Issues dealing with Family Law and Women.
- Issues dealing with commercial law in, among, or with, the countries of the Middle East.
- Issues related to Muslims forcibly transported to America through the slave trade and their efforts to preserve their Muslim identity.
- Legal issues relating to Israel, Turkey, North Africa, and South Asia.
- Islamic Law and Muslims in Sub-Saharan Africa.
JINEL welcomes submissions of articles and comments by students, scholars, and practitioners in the fields of Islamic and Near Eastern law. To submit an article, either e-mail the manuscript as an attachment to jinel@lawnet.ucla.edu or mail a copy of the manuscript on a 3.5" floppy disk or USB drive and as a hardcopy to the following address:

Manuscripts should be double-spaced, with wide margins, and include the author's name, address, telephone number, and professional background. JINEL follows the transliteration system as established by the International Journal of Middle Eastern Studies. However, manuscripts should not contain any diacritical marks except for ayn and hamza. Citations should conform to THE BLUEBOOK: A UNIFORM SYSTEM OF CITATIONS (17th ed. 2000). Please submit manuscripts no later than August 8th, 2008. Submissions after that date will be considered for our following issue.
