Middle East FLAS Fellowship Program
The Center for Near Eastern Studies administers the federally-funded Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship program for the Middle East at UCLA, supporting graduate training in Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian and Turkish and related area studies.
The purpose of the FLAS Fellowship program is to enrich the nation's pool of area and international specialists. Applicants must provide reasonable assurance that they plan to pursue a career in teaching or other service of a public nature upon completion of their training.
New and continuing UCLA graduate students in all disciplines may apply for the academic year and/or the summer FLAS awards. The AY FLAS Fellowship provides a stipend of $14,500, and tuition and fees up to $11,500. Awardees must take a full course load (a minimum of 12 units) each term, including Middle East area studies and a language course for a grade. The Summer FLAS Fellowship supports intensive summer language study in approved programs in the US and abroad. The award provides a stipend of $2,500 and up to $4,000 in tuition and fees. Students applying for a summer grant should provide summer study plans, including the name of the educational institution, the cost of tuition and fees and the start and end date of the program.
