2007 CAIR-LA Spring Internship Program

WHAT: The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Southern California (CAIR-LA) is seeking applicants for its Spring internship program. The program is open to Muslim college or university students age 18 and older who have legal status in the U.S., in order to receive a monthly stipend. CAIR's internship program provides first-hand experience and training in community outreach, education, governmental relations, lobbying, public and media relations, legal and civil rights, and research and leadership training. The application deadline is March 18, 2007.

Civil Rights Legal Externship (Open to Second and Third Year Law Students Only)

Extern will work closely with the Civil Rights Coordinator on investigating and resolving cases reported to CAIR-LA, in addition to other duties that may be delegated.

Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):

Assist in documenting incidents by counseling and interviewing individuals regarding their case. Work with Civil Rights Coordinator on developing steps to assist individuals. Manage case load during externship. Facilitate, mediate and bring closure to cases. Research laws and policies on various cases that are applicable. Draft letters, assist individuals and partner attorneys in case follow-up. Update databases containing information about abuses reported to CAIR-LA. Work on legal project designed to further community knowledge and/or provide services. Follow up with individuals on the status of their case.

Qualifications:

Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information. Organized and demonstrate the ability to follow through the various on-going and newly assigned tasks. Capacity to prioritize and deliver results. Excellent written communication skills and a commitment to serving the community. Ability to listen and understand individual cases. Ability to communicate with individuals who may have limited grasp of English. Ideally, but not necessarily, will have the ability to speak Urdu, Farsi or Arabic.
