Organizations and Think Tanks Supportive of Affirmative Action and Other Race-Conscious Remedies

The Affirmative Action and Diversity Project: A Web Page for Research
"This site presents diverse opinions regarding Affirmative Action topics; rather than taking a singular pro or con position, it is designed to help lend many different voices to the debates surrounding the issues of affirmative action. This site is an academic resource and it provides scholars, students, and the interested public with on-site articles and theoretical analyses, policy documents, current legislative updates, and an annotated bibliography of research and teaching materials. Because of the physical location of this resource, it contains a substantial amount of information on California politics and the recent Proposition 209. Each sub-page is divided up by categories, which may be viewed at a glance from the map. New links and documents are being added continually."
The Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action By Any Means Necessary (BAMN)
"BAMN was founded in July 1995 in Berkeley, California, in response to the attack on affirmative action in the University of California system. BAMN was formed for the purpose of organizing the struggle against the resegregation of higher education.

The basic character of the coming period in American politics will be determined by the development of fight over affirmative action. In historical terms, the question of affirmative action is no more likely to be resolved by court suits and ballot initiatives than were slavery or Jim Crow.

What is necessary now in order to successfully defend affirmative action is the power of a social movement like the one that secured affirmative action in the first place: a new, militant, integrated, mass civil rights movement. We dedicate ourselves to this task."

Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting
"FAIR is the national media watch group that offers well-documented criticism of media bias and censorship. We seek to invigorate the First Amendment by advocating for greater diversity in the press. We scrutinize media practices that marginalize public interest, minority and dissenting viewpoints.

FAIR was established in 1986 to shake up the establishment-dominated media. As an anti-censorship organization, we expose important news stories that are neglected and defend working journalists when they are muzzled.

Ultimately, FAIR believes that structural reform is needed to break up the dominant media conglomerates, establish independent public broadcasting, and promote strong, non-profit alternative sources of information." [For great information, check out "FAIR’s Media Activism Kit" under "Activism."]

The Institute for Public Accuracy
"A few large think tanks have had enormous impact on news coverage and political discourse in the United States. So far – despite the wide media penetration achieved by the Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute, the Brookings Institution and other major think tanks – there has been little timely public debate about their specific assertions. As a nationwide consortium, the Institute for Public Accuracy represents an unprecedented effort to bring other voices to the mass-media table often dominated by a few major think tanks.

IPA's Roster of Experts includes 200 researchers and analysts highly qualified to assess the research data and policy prescriptions of think tanks. IPA provides well-documented bulletins to journalists, commentators and producers who have been deluged with material from well-funded think tanks. By reaching out to the national press corps with to-the-point material, IPA is a resource for media professionals. IPA works to broaden public discourse in mainstream media, while building communication with alternative media outlets and grassroots activists."

[Site includes most recent news releases under "What’s New", news releases for the past year under "News Releases", and a list of "IPA Articles."]

Labor/Community Strategy Center
"The Labor/Community Strategy Center is a multiracial anticorporate "think-tank/act-tank" committed to building democratic internationalist social movements. The Strategy Center's work encompasses all aspects of urban life: it emphasizes rebuilding the labor movement, fighting for environmental justice, truly mass transit, and immigrant rights, as well as actively opposing the growing criminalization, racialization, and feminization of poverty. Through direct grassroots organizing by the Strategy Center's WATCHDOG environmental project, Bus Riders Union, and Urban Strategies Group, and through research, policy development, strategy formation, and publication, the Labor/Community Strategy Center is generating a creative and aggressive response to the growing power of the corporate-led political Right."
Leadership Conference on Civil Rights
"For almost a half century, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights has led the fight for equal opportunity and social justice.

Founded on the eve of historic victories in the struggle against racial discrimination, the Leadership Conference has become the nerve-center for the struggle against discrimination in all its forms.

Beginning with 30 organizations, mostly civil rights and labor groups, the Leadership Conference has grown in numbers, scope and effectiveness. Today, it consists of more than 185 national organizations, representing persons of color, women, labor unions, individuals with disabilities, older Americans, major religious groups, gays and lesbians and civil liberties and human rights groups."
