Alumni Awards Carnegie Mellon University September 12, 2008
First presented in 1950, the Alumni Awards recognize
alumni, faculty and students for their service to the university and for their
achievements in the arts, humanities, sciences, technology and business. To date
more than 500 individuals have been honored through the program.
Carnegie Mellon University's Alumni Association Board of Directors is pleased

The 2008 Alumni Award Recipients: Alumni Service Awards
Elizabeth (Betsy) Atkins Rogers, MM’68, an outstanding volunteer for her
class, her college and the university as a whole, who has connected classmates
and friends with each other and the university for many years.
Shirley Herman Townsend, MM’51, whose tireless work and initiative has been a
major factor in maintaining the vibrant Rochester, New York Alumni Chapter
during more than 40 years. Alumni Achievement Awards
Dennis M. Dimiduk, E’84,’89, whose leadership of Air Force research in
advanced metallics and simulation methods has had a major impact on both his
technical field and the nation’s security.
Margaret C. (Peggy) Eisenhauer, A’83, internationally renowned as one of the
finest lighting designers today for the stage, motion pictures and concerts, as
well as a superb mentor of young professionals.
Brian P. Gill, HS’90, a noted social scientist whose research on K-12
education policy is helping to solve problems of great importance to children
and families throughout the nation and the region.
Pradeep S, Sindhu, S’83,’84, the founder of Juniper Networks and a technical
visionary in the field of high performance networking, whose contribution to
Internet router technology is legendary.
David VandeLinde, E’64,’65,’68, vice chancellor of two major British
universities and dean of the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins
University, whose expert leadership and creativity have made a great positive
impact on the schools. Recent Alumni Awards
Gary J. Gates, HNZ’00, national expert on the demographic and economic
characteristics of the gay and lesbian population, for his important research
and commitment to social justice, gay rights and human rights.
Catherine A. (Cat) Mazza, A’99, artist, activist, craftswoman and professor
of new media, whose work has not only been recognized in traditional venues but
involves new contexts and reaches new audiences.
Richard W. Pell, A’99, artist, filmmaker and professor, whose work is an
interdisciplinary combination of art, science, engineering and activism, which
has won international esteem. Faculty Service Awards
James Daniels, acclaimed author and faculty director of the Creative Writing
Program, whose award-winning teaching and support of student writers continue in
service to alumni.
Gordon H. Lewis and Pamela P. Lewis, A’74, ‘80, Heinz School faculty known
for helping their students as individuals, as young professionals and as alumni,
and for welcoming them home every year. Student Service Awards
Mohammed Abu Zeinab, TPR’09, a business major and role model on the Qatar
campus, who contributes greatly to campus activities, student government and
community service.
George J. Diabes, S’09, chemistry major and Fifth Year Scholar, for his
exceptional contributions to the residence halls, his department, music groups,
The Tartan and tutoring in the community.
Dhruv Mathur, HS’09, information systems major, whose inspiring service with
the South Asian Student Alliance and the President’s Student Advisory Council
brings the campus community together. Honorary Alumni
Chip Ganassi, HA’08, who has treated Tartan Racing throughout its history
like one of his own professional teams, helping set a world-class standard with
advice, mentoring and sponsorship.
Joseph C. and Molly Walton, HA’08, who from the beginning have worked as
energetically for Tartan Racing as any team member, championing its importance
to the region’s future to the local business and foundation communities.
