Conference Description & Call for Papers

Together with the International Lesbian and Gay Law Association (ILGLaw), The Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy, at UCLA School of Law, will host “The Global Arc of Justice: Sexual Orientation Law Around the World” taking place in Los Angeles & West Hollywood, California, from March 11-14, 2009. The conference will bring together LGBT advocates from around the world to share knowledge and expertise on specific LGBT issues that cut across countries and regions. Working groups and plenary panels will be focused on the following topics:

  • Overturning 377: Repealing Sodomy Laws in Former British Colonies and the Caribbean

  • Implementing the Yogyakarta Principles

  • Legal Recognition of Same-sex couples

  • The Advancement of LGBT Rights by National Governments

  • Regional Approaches to Advancing LGBT Rights: The EU and Mercosur Countries

  • Transgender Issues Around the World

  • Human Rights & Global Health: The Connection between LGBT Equality & the Fight Against HIV/AIDS

The conference schedule will also include paper sessions and panels based on submissions.  The deadline to submit is Monday, December 1, 2008. Please see the following link for more information:

Registration rates for the conference are as follows:

     Regular: $465, before January 16, 2009; $600, after.
     Student: $265, before January 16, 2009; $350, after.
     Friday Only, with CLE, plus Gala Reception: $200
     Friday Only, plus Gala Reception: $100
     Friday Afternoon (1-6PM) Only: No Charge

A special “Angel Rate” to benefit a scholarship fund for international conference participants is available. The tax-deductible donation is $1,000 and includes a special VIP reception, host committee membership for the Gala Reception on Friday night, and recognition on all conference materials.

The official Conference Hotel is the Ramada in West Hollywood. A special conference rate of $139/per night is available. The deadline to make your reservation is January 12, 2009. Cancellation Policy  - Registrants who are unable to attend the conference will receive a refund less a $50 administrative fee ONLY if a formal cancellation request is received by February 11, 2009. Cancellation requests must be emailed to bunnao@law.ucla.edu. The Williams Institute reserves the right to cancel any program and assumes to responsibility for personal expense. Participants are responsible for cancellation of any hotel reservations made, per hotel cancellation policy.
