Los Angeles- The L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center will present Bob Mackie, nine-time Emmy winning and three-time Oscar nominated fashion and costume designer, with its Rand Schrader Distinguished Achievement Award at its 32nd Anniversary Gala and Auction to be held Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Century Plaza Hotel. The Center will present philanthropist, professor and businessman Charles ("Chuck") Williams, founder of the Charles R. Williams Project on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy of UCLA School of Law, with its Board of Directors Award. Carol Burnett will make a special appearance on behalf of Bob Mackie.

"On behalf of the Gay and Lesbian Center, we are tremendously honored to have the opportunity to recognize these two shining examples of achievement and leadership in our community," said Lorri L. Jean, chief executive officer of the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center. "Bob Mackie is known worldwide for his groundbreaking work in the field of fashion and costume design, and the fact that he has achieved so much while living as an openly gay man speaks volumes for his courage, his fortitude and his honesty.

"Chuck Williams has generously contributed the fruits of his own hard work to create an enduring institution that will help shape the law and public policy in the areas of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights for generations to come. His vision, leadership and three decades of activism have made a lasting impact on our community and on our world."

Bob Mackie is being honored with the Rand Schrader Award in recognition of his courage and integrity in living his very public life as an openly gay man and for the prestige and positive visibility he has brought to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community as he climbed to the heights of his profession. Among his long list of achievements, he has received nine Emmy Awards from more than 30 nominations, as well as three Oscar nominations.

The Rand Schrader Distinguished Achievement is named for the late Hon. Rand Schrader, gay rights activist and long-time supporter of the Gay And Lesbian Center, who was the one of the first openly gay judges to serve in California.

Chuck Williams founded the Charles R. Williams Project on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy, a national think tank housed at UCLA School of Law, and since 2001 has pledged more than $7 million to support its mission to advance sexual orientation law and public policy through rigorous, independent research and scholarship. The Project assists scholars in generating new ideas, researching and developing these ideas, and producing published legal scholarship and public policy analysis. It also works to disseminate research and scholarship to law- and policy-makers, the media, and the public through regular conferences, meetings and published materials.

The Board of Directors Award is given on occasion to an organization or individual who serves as an example of achievement and leadership for the GLBT community, as well as for the society at large. Charles R. Williams, through his founding vision and generous financial support of the Williams Project, has created an institution with the capacity for profoundly influencing public policy and legal scholarship for the betterment of GLBT people and the greater society.
