The Williams Project’s Gary Gates Presented Financial Analysis of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in Washington Today

February 14, 2006

Senior Research Fellow Gary Gates presented findings from a UC Blue Ribbon Commission report entitled "Financial Analysis of Don't Ask, Don't Tell: How much does the gay ban cost" on Capitol Hill today.  Gates served as the Senior Project Consultant for the study which estimated the cost of the ban at $363.8 million dollars, nearly double that of a GAO estimate published last year.  He told staff persons from the offices of more than 50 members of Congress that, "this study demonstrates that in a time of scarce resources, valuable and competent personnel are being fired from the military at a significant cost to American taxpayers, most of whom support a repeal of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy."  The full study can be found at here.
