Linda Garnets, PhD
Linda Garnets received her doctorate in clinical/community psychology from the University of Michigan in 1978. Dr. Garnets is on the faculty in psychology, women’s studies, and LGBT studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She has been teaching a course at UCLA she created 20 years ago called the “Psychology of the Lesbian Experience,” and a course on “Sexual Orientation and Mental Health.” She is a psychotherapist and organizational consultant in Los Angeles, specializing in work with gay male, lesbian, and bisexual clients and nonprofit organizations. She has provided consultation to over fifty local and national gay, lesbian, bisexual, and AIDS agencies.

Dr. Garnets has been active over the past 25 years in addressing gay, lesbian, and bisexual concerns both academically and professionally. She is nationally known for her publications and presentations on lesbian, gay, and bisexual psychology, including a co-edited anthology titled Psychological Perspectives on Lesbian and Gay Male Experiences and a co-edited special issue of the Journal of Social Issues on “Women’s Sexualities: Perspectives on Sexual Orientation and Gender.” In 2001, she gave a keynote address on “Sexual Orientations in Perspective” at the American Psychological Association’s 2nd Annual National Multicultural Conference and Summit. She has written and presented numerous papers on the state of the art in research and practice in gay, lesbian, and bisexual psychology. Paper topics have focused on gay and lesbian experiences (e.g., identity development, parenting, community building, heterosexism and victimization of gay men and lesbians) and on provision of services to gay and lesbian populations (e.g., social/community interventions and gay/lesbian affirmative psychotherapy). Her extensive lectures, curriculum development, and trainings have helped to foster professional public awareness about lesbian, gay, and bisexual concerns.

Dr. Garnets is a national spokesperson on behalf or lesbian, gay, and bisexual concerns, having assumed a leadership role within the American Psychological Association (APA). She is past Chair of the Board of the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest; past Chair of the Committee on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Concerns (CLGBC); and past Co-Chair of CLGBC’s Task Force on Bias in Psychotherapy with Lesbians and Gay Men.

Dr. Garnets is a recipient of the American Psychological Association’s Distinguished Professional Contribution Award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Gay and Lesbian Issues and of APA’s Outstanding Contribution Award from the Committee on Lesbian and Gay Concerns. She has is the recipient of the Monnette/Hurwitz Trust Distinguished Achievement Award.  At UCLA, she has received the Women’s Studies Excellence in Teaching Award and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Outstanding Faculty Award.
