MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR EZEKIEL WEBBER

Monday May 10, 2004
5:00-6:00 p.m.
UCLA School of Law
4th Floor, Hugh and Hazel Darling Law Library Tower

Dear members of the Williams Project community:

It is with great sadness that I inform you that Ezekiel (Zeke) Webber, one of the most active UCLA School of Law students with the Williams Project and a member of the School's Program in Public Interest Law and Policy, passed away last week. The cause of his death is still unknown. A memorial service for Zeke will be held this coming Monday, May 10, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. on the fourth floor of the UCLA School of Law Library Tower.

In his two years at UCLA School of Law, Zeke contributed so much to the law school community and to the Williams Project. If you have attended any of the Williams Project conferences or panels, you probably saw him at the registration table, helping people sign in and passing out reading materials. Zeke volunteered at almost every event that the Williams Project has held for the past two years.

Last summer, Zeke was awarded a Williams Project Summer Fellowship to do LGBT legal rights work with the ACLU of Southern California. An Eagle Scout himself, Zeke worked on ACLU cases related to the Boy Scouts' denial of membership to gay scouts. He also worked on a lawsuit against a city that had refused to issue a permit for an LGBT Pride parade and on issues related to promoting diversity education in public schools. In March of this year, Zeke spoke eloquently at a fundraising party in Long Beach dedicated to raising money for this year's summer fellowships.

Zeke also served as the Managing Editor of the Dukeminier Awards law journal for the past two years, putting in countless hours to publish the journal's first three volumes. Just a few weeks ago, he was selected to serve as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal next year. Also during the past two months, Zeke and other students had been working to create a new annual moot court competition focused on sexual orientation law issues.

If you met Zeke, you will probably remember him as I do—and as he appears in the picture above -- his face beaming with a huge smile. Further information about the memorial service for Zeke is below.

Thank you,

Brad Sears

To contribute to the fund, you can write a check to the UCLA Foundation/Law/Webber Memorial Fund.

The check can be mailed to:
