Reception to follow

The Charles R. Williams Project on Sexual Orientation Law is to pleased to announce that its 2002-03 Visiting Lecture Series will begin on September 23, 2002 with a presentation by Professor Chai R. Feldblum, "Rectifying the Tilt: Equality Lessons from Religion, Disability, Sexual Orientation, and Transgender."

Chai R. Feldblum is a Professor of Law and Director of the Federal Legislation Clinic at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. At the Clinic, Professor Feldblum coined the phrase “legislative lawyer” and teaches students how to combine law and politics in the drafting and negotiating of legislation.

Professor Feldblum graduated from Barnard College in 1979 and Harvard Law School in 1985. She clerked for Judge Frank Coffin on the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and for Justice Harry A. Blackmun on the U.S. Supreme Court. Following her clerkships, Professor Feldblum worked for the American Civil Liberties Union, serving as a lead lawyer drafting and negotiating the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Professor Feldblum joined the Georgetown law faculty in 1991, and has specialized in civil rights law (with an emphasis on disability rights and gay rights) and on the legislative process. A leading scholar and speaker on gay and lesbian issues, AIDS, and disability, Professor Feldblum has been actively involved in such federal legislative issues as challenging the military’s ban on service by gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals, opposing anti-gay and anti-AIDS amendments, and serving as the lead drafter of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

Professor Feldblum’s writings on gay rights issues include Sexual Orientation, Morality, and the Law: Devlin Revisited, Pittsburgh L. Rev. (1996); The Moral Rhetoric of Legislation, NYU L. Rev., (1997); and The Federal Gay Civil Rights Bill: From Bella to ENDA, in Creating Change: Sexuality, Public Policy, & Civil Rights ( J. D’Emilio, W. Turner & U. Vaid eds. 2000).

THE CHARLES R. WILLIAMS PROJECT ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION LAW

The Williams Project is a think tank dedicated to the field of sexual orientation law and public policy. The Williams Project supports legal scholarship, legal research, policy analysis, and education regarding sexual orientation discrimination and other legal issues impacting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. The Williams Project originated from the recognition that issues central to sexual orientation law not only impact the lesbian and gay civil rights movement, but have profound implications for the development of the law and public policy in general. Drawing on the tremendous intellectual and material resources of UCLA, one of the nation's leading universities, the Williams Project provides a national center for the interdisciplinary exploration of these issues by scholars, judges, practitioners, advocates, and students.

The Williams Project was made possible through the vision and generosity of philanthropist, educator, and businessman, Charles R. Williams. Professor William B. Rubenstein, one of the nation's leading experts on sexual orientation law, is the Project's Faculty Chair. Professor R. Bradley Sears is the Project's Director.
