SECOND ANNUAL UPDATE ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION LAW & PUBLIC POLICY

This half-day conference is the second annual update on sexual orientation law to be sponsored by the Williams Project, a national think tank dedicated to the field of sexual orientation law and public policy. During this year's update, three separate panels will explore recent developments in criminal, employment, and family law. Topics covered will include Lawrence and Garner v. Texas, the Supreme Court's constitutional review of Texas' sodomy law; developments in employment law, including the 9th Circuit's decision in Rene v. MGM Grand Hotel; and strategies for securing legal recognition of the rights and responsibilities of same-sex couples in California. Practitioners who attend the conference will earn four units of CLE credit.

Opening of The Williams Project Reading Room

5:30 -7:30 p.m.

The Hugh & Hazel Darling Law Library Tower

Immediately after the second annual update, there will be a reception and the opening of the Williams Project Reading Room and collection on sexual orientation law and public policy. The Reading Room will contain a comprehensive, international collection of works in all types of media related to sexual orientation law and public policy. A law librarian and research assistants will staff the Reading Room and be available to assist scholars with research, to maintain and expand the collection, and to publish a periodic bibliography of the collection. The Williams Project Reading Room and collection were made possible through a generous donation of over $1 million by Charles R. Williams and an anonymous donor. We invite you to join us for the historic opening of the first law library collection in the world dedicated to sexual orientation law and public policy.

 


REGISTRATION AND CLE CREDIT

This event is free and open to the public. However, space is limited. We therefore request that you register in advance. Please RSVP to the UCLA Office of Events at (310) 825-0971 or via e-mail at events@law.ucla.edu. Please specify whether you are registering for the 1) Annual Update, 2) Reading Room Opening, or 3) both.

Practitioners who attend the conference will be able to earn four units of general continuing legal education (CLE) credit. The registration fee for CLE Credit will be $40.00. To pre-register for CLE credit, please contact the UCLA Office of Events at (310) 825-0971 or via e-mail at events@law.ucla.edu and provide the following information: your name, address, phone number, fax number, e-mail address, and state bar number. The $40.00 registration fee for CLE credit can be paid at the door. Make your check payable to the UC Regents.

DIRECTIONS AND PARKING:

Take the 405 San Diego Freeway to Sunset Blvd., and then head east on Sunset Blvd. Next, turn right on Hilgard Ave. and then turn right on Westholme. Parking is available in Parking Lot 2 on the UCLA campus for $7.00. You can purchase a parking pass from the Parking Kiosk just inside the UCLA campus on Westholme. Walk north to the UCLA School of Law. Room 1430 is on the first floor of the building's main hallway.

THE CHARLES R. WILLIAMS PROJECT ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION LAW

The Charles R. Williams Project on Sexual Orientation Law is a national think tank dedicated to the field of sexual orientation law and public policy. It advances law and public policy through rigorous, independent research and scholarship. Drawing on the intellectual and material resources of UCLA, one of the world's leading research universities, the Williams Project provides a national center for the interdisciplinary exploration of the issues central to sexual orientation law by scholars, judges, practitioners, advocates, and students. The Project assists scholars in generating new ideas, and producing published legal scholarship and policy analysis. It also work to disseminate research and scholarship to law and policy-makers, the media, and the public through regular conferences, meetings, and published materials.

The Williams Project was founded in the fall of 2001, through a gift of philanthropist, educator, and businessman, Charles R. Williams. Professor William B.
