American Civil Liberties Union
(ACLU)
The ACLU has actively supported the struggle for lesbian and gay civil rights since the 1960s and in 1986, it established its national Lesbian and Gay Rights Project. Working in close coordination with the ACLU's affiliates nationwide, the Project coordinates an extensive legal program and conducts a broad range of public policy and public education activities.
Casebook
on Sexual Orientation Law
Created by Dan Pinello (Associate Professor of
Government, John Jay College of Criminal Justice of The
City University of New York), the Casebook on Sexual
Orientation Law is a free Internet casebook on sexual
orientation and the law that may be a useful reference
for library clients. About 150 edited decisions from
American appellate courts adjudicating lesbian and gay
rights claims currently appear on the site. 19 cases
come from California state courts and the U.S. Court of
Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Decisions are arranged by
case name, court, subject matter, and year. Subjects
include: child custody, visitation, adoption, and foster
care by lesbian or gay parents or their domestic
partners; health insurance and other benefits for
domestic partners; same-sex marriage or its
approximation; sexual-orientation discrimination in
public accommodations, housing, and the workplace; gays
in the military; the free speech, free association, and
political participation rights of gay people; the
constitutionality of consensual sodomy and solicitation
statutes; and others.
GayLawNet
GayLawNet is dedicated to providing general information, news and resources concerning the law as it affects the global gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual and intersex (GLBTI) community and the simplest access to a gay or lesbian (or gay or lesbian-friendly) lawyer. Based in Australia.

Devoted to covering legal issues of interest to the
lesbian and gay community. Law & Sexuality s
primary purpose is to provide the legal and academic
communities with readily available information on legal
issues affecting the lesbian and gay community. First
published in the summer of 1991, Law & Sexuality addresses
issues that range from child custody to military
discrimination to state sodomy statues to national
funding of the arts, with theoretical and practical
articles by academician, practitioners, and students.
The review also includes a large student-written recent
developments section that covers all major cases and
statutory developments of interest to lesbians, gay men,
bisexuals and transgender men and women.
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
(NGLTF)
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) is the national progressive organization working for the civil rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people, with the vision and commitment to building a powerful political movement.
National Lesbian and Gay Law Association
(NLGLA)

the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military (CSSMM)
Located at the University of California, Santa Barbara,
the Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military promotes the interdisciplinary analysis of
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and other
marginalized sexual identities in the armed forces.

Center for
Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS)
The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS) was the first
university-based research center dedicated to the critical field
of Lesbian and Gay Studies. Starting in May 1986, acclaimed
scholar Martin Duberman worked tirelessly for many years to
convince many universities of the necessity of establishing a
program that fostered research and scholarship about lesbian and
gay lives and social institutions, as well as about homophobia
and oppression. CLAGS found its official home in 1991, at the
City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School. CLAGS
fosters scholarship that promotes self-knowledge and
self-discovery and provides the vehicle for thoughtful analysis.
The center sees its primary mission as bringing together eminent
scholars, activists, artists and writers to chart new territory
in lesbian and gay studies, and to bring this groundbreaking
work to the attention of the larger community.
Gay and Lesbian Demographics (A Research Focus of the
Urban Institute)
Family structure, both conventional and unconventional,
is one of the many issues explored by the Center on
Labor, Human Services, and Population. Researchers delve
into issues on same-sex marriage, Census 2000's method
of counting gay men and lesbians, the link between
social tolerance and a city's high-tech industry
success, and more.

Lambda Institute of Gay and Lesbian Studies (Canada)
The LAMBDA Institute of Gay and Lesbian Studies is a
Canadian-based educational consulting service provider
focusing on gay and lesbian social issues. The LAMBDA
Institute of Gay and Lesbian Studies is a research and
education centre for educators, scholars, specialists,
students, and other interested persons concerned with
gay and lesbian social issues, particularly, the
multi-faceted issues of the homosexual culture and
lifestyle, problems with stability and security,
political and social changes.
Liberty Education Forum (LEF)
Originating as part of the Log Cabin Education Fund six
years ago, the Liberty Education Forum was established
to provide a non-partisan education and research
component to complement the work of the Log Cabin
Republicans, a gay and lesbian organization. But with a
full-scale launching in July 2001, the LEF Forum is a
new, non-partisan educational think tank that is
dedicated to new ideas and new directions for the gay
community, with a centrist approach.
NGLTF Policy Institute
The Policy Institute of the National Gay and Lesbian
Task Force (NGLTF) is a think tank dedicated to
research, policy analysis, and strategic projects to
advance the greater understanding and equality of
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. It is a
proactive hub of research, policy analysis, tactical
thinking, and strategic initiatives. This site contains
links to NGLTF policy reports on various topics such as
caregiving, the economics of same-sex marriage,
homelessness, transgender issues, current political
candidates, education, and youth.
ONE
National Gay and Lesbian Archives
Located in Los Angeles, California, ONE Institute & Archives houses
a research library on
gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered heritage and
concerns.
The Program for the Study of Sexuality, Gender, Health
and Human Rights
Directed by Carole S. Vance, the Program for the Study
of Sexuality, Gender, Health and Human Rights provides a
supportive intellectual location to further studies of
sexuality, gender, health, and human rights. Each year,
the Program awards residential fellowships of varying
lengths to postdoctoral scholars, advocates, and
activists conducting innovative interdisciplinary work
on the intersecting themes of sexuality, gender, health
and human rights in U.S. and international contexts. The
focus is on examining and expanding traditional
definitions and boundaries, while acknowledging
conditions of inequality, marginality, and post-coloniality.
The Program is located at Columbia University, in the
Division of Sociomedical Sciences at the School of
Public Health.
Sexual
Orientation: Science, Education, and Policy
This site features work by Dr.
Gregory Herek, an internationally recognized
authority on sexual prejudice (also called homophobia),
hate crimes, and AIDS stigma. It provides factual
information to promote the use of scientific knowledge
for education and enlightened public policy related to
sexual orientation and HIV/AIDS.
Sexual Orientation Issues
in the News (SOIN)
Created under USC's Annenberg School for
Communication Dean Geoffrey Cowan and
directed by Pulitzer-winning journalist Leroy Aarons, SOIN
works to assure that journalism education addresses
issues affecting sexual minorities along with other
groups in our diverse society. SOIN aims to foster
better journalism by providing online resources to help
journalism and communications educators address the
history and context of sexual-diversity issues; holding
forums and workshops; conducting surveys, audits and
other research to analyze news coverage of
sexual-orientation issues and translate the results into
a resource for journalism educators.
Transgender Law and Policy Institute (TLPI)
The Transgender Law and Policy Institute is a non-profit
organization dedicated to engaging in effective advocacy
for transgender people in our society. The TLPI brings
experts and advocates together to work on law and policy
initiatives designed to advance transgender equality.
