The Center for Information as Evidence presents Dean Spade
“Documenting Gender”
12-1:30 pm
UCLA’s Moore Hall, Room 3027

Taking as its starting point the incoherent matrix of hundreds of conflicting gender (re)classification rules operating across the US in departments of motor vehicles, public benefits systems, prisons, shelters, group homes, federal, state, and local data collection contexts, this paper asks what a transgender politics of War on Terror surveillance practices, and government data collection and administration of identity generally, might demand.  Such a project entails a recognition of the interwoven politics of mass imprisonment, national standardization and consolidation of identity documentation and data, the cri criminalization of poverty, and the neoliberal cooptation of social movements.
