Ethan Elkind Editorial on Renewable Energy Featured in Sacramento Bee

Does renewable energy necessarily mean clean energy?  In an editorial published in the Sacramento Bee on November 24, UCLA and UC Berkeley Climate Policy Associate Ethan Elkind endorses policy measures that California can implement to ensure we get clean air results from renewables.

Elkind recommends several steps the state can take.  He says that policymakers should focus on the underlying clean energy goals of renewable implementation; according to Elkind, "we need a greenhouse gas standard for our entire electricity system – not just a renewable standard."  Further, he says, the state should embrace technological innovations like energy storage and demand response, and also consider linking California renewables to a regional trading market.

Elkind is the author of a recent UCLA/UC Berkeley report on the future of renewable energy resources in California, entitled "Renewable Energy Beyond 2020: Next Steps for California."
