Professor Schwartz Cited By The Atlantic on What Police Departments Can Learn From Lawsuits

April 25, 2016— A 2012 paper by Professor Joanna Schwartz was cited in The Atlantic for its discussion of what police departments can learn from lawsuits filed against them. Professor Schwartz notes that it is unclear as to whether big payouts effectively deter future bad policing.

“The deterrent signal is further skewed in police misconduct cases, where officers are almost certain to be indemnified and judgments against departments come from city budgets, not police coffers,” writes Schwartz.
