July 8, 2015 –- Professor Eugene Volokh commented on Jacksonville Chief Judge Mark Mahon’s order to ban demonstrations or dissemination of materials outside the Duval County courthouse. Chief Mahon’s order bans any protests that “degrade or call into question the integrity of the court or any of its judges.” His comments appear in a Florida Times-Union article.
In his blog for The Washington Post, Eugene Volokh, a professor at UCLA School of Law, says the protest ban is not constitutional. “Courts have very broad authority about what goes on inside the courtroom,” Volokh states. “They have very little authority about what goes on on the sidewalks.”
