Professor Volokh Quoted in Christian Science Monitor on Academic Freedom as University Professor Suspected of Ties to Islamic State is Investigated

January 21, 2016 – Professor Eugene Volokh was quoted in the Christian Science Monitor on the issue of academic freedom after calls were made for the suspension of a Kent State University professor who is under investigation for possible ties to the Islamic State.   

“As a matter of academic freedom, they can’t just [fire or suspend someone] the moment someone makes an accusation,” said Professor Volokh. But if there is evidence that gives a university reason to believe a professor is guilty of a crime, it can act. “Universities don’t have to operate from a beyond-reasonable-doubt stance.”
