May 16, 2016—Professor Eugene Volokh was cited in a CQ Researcher report investigating campaign finance and the threat of “big money”—or lack thereof—in tainting democracy during and after the 2016 election. Some experts, including Richard Hansen, law professor at University of California Irvine, believe that imposing spending restrictions on political campaigns could encourage and equalize the political playing field. Volokh, however, maintains that post-election government decisions could be unjustly impacted by spending restrictions.
“[Hansen’s interest in political equality doesn’t ] justify restricting speech,” said Volokh.
