Professor Arenella Tells Business Insider: Sentencing in Brock Turner Case is ‘Pure Nonsense’

June 30, 2016—Professor Peter Arenella was quoted by Business Insider on Judge Aaron Persky’s sentencing decision in the case of Brock Turner, an ex-Stanford swimmer convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman in 2015. Judge Persky sentenced Turner to six months in county jail and three years probation despite his crime holding a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.

"This is pure nonsense and indicates that the judge doesn’t fully grasp the concept of giving defendant their just deserts," said Professor Arenella. “He never addresses the need for the community to have a punishment that is proportionate to the severity of the crime committed."
