Professor Schwartz Quoted by the Chicago Reporter on Minneapolis Push to Make Police Officers Carry Liability Insurance

June 29, 2016—Professor Joanna Schwartz was quoted by the Chicago Reporter about a push by Michelle Gross, an advocate for victims of police brutality and their families, to require Minneapolis police officers to carry professional liability insurance. Gross believes that police liability insurance could improve officer accountability and reduce the amount of money the city spends on settlements.

“We have to be in a stage of experimentation and measurement [with many police accountability measures], because clearly the status quo isn’t working,” said Professor Schwartz, “Creating financial incentives should be one of the levers we think about.”
