July 28, 2016—Professor Adam Winkler was quoted by Roll Call and various other news outlets on the choice by the Democratic Party to address gun violence issues at the Democratic National Convention. This year, the DNC featured speakers who have been touched by gun violence, including Christine Leinonen, whose son was killed at the attack on Orlando’s Pulse night club in June. Professor Winkler acknowledges that putting issues of gun violence center stage is atypical at the DNC, as doing so has the possibility of alienating pro-gun voters in swing states.
“The Democratic Party feels like this is going to play well with all voters they need to turn out,” said Professor Winkler. “This election is very much a test case for the future of gun control in the Democratic party.”
