Professor Eagly Quoted by Salon on Popular Entertainment and the Justice System

August 22, 2016-- Professor Ingrid Eagly was quoted by Salon in an article addressing the phenomenon of popular entertainment influencing the justice system. Netflix’s wildly popular show “Making a Murderer” and “This American Life”’s offshoot the podcast “Serial,” an offshoot of “This American Life,” reflect a public interest in taking a second look at cases already processed by the justice system, and, in some cases, changing the outcomes.

 “There’s been a growing consensus that the system has gotten too criminalized. You see state legislatures decriminalizing some things, President Obama issuing clemencies,” says Professor Eagly, “And a sense that it correlates with race and poverty.”
