Professor Volokh Quoted by S.F. Chronicle on CA Gun Rights Group Suit to Publish Home Addresses of Lawmakers

August 8, 2016—Professor Eugene Volokh was quoted by the San Francisco Chronicle about a lawsuit filed by a CA gun rights group over the removal of a blog post containing the home addresses of lawmakers who supported pro-gun control legislation. The Office of Legislative Counsel called for the post’s removal in accordance with a California state law that makes it illegal to post the home addresses of lawmakers with the intent to threaten or cause bodily harm to those individuals.

 “Of course, the First Amendment doesn’t protect true threats of violence, but the statute and the California government’s demand letter forbid all publication of these facts, whether or not accompanied by threats,” said Professor Volokh.
