Professor Bank Quoted in Los Angeles Times on Dubious MLS Attendance Records

October 31, 2016—Professor Steven Bank was quoted in the Los Angeles Times on how the attendance figures released by Major League Soccer (MLS) don’t actually reflect the number of people who attend the events.

“There’s a bit of a game being played in all sports,” said Professor Bank. “The stats on the number of people at games is a proxy for . . . the popularity of the sport.”

He added, “MLS is still not as transparent as it needs to be . . . to trust their proclamations. They don’t release enough information that someone could evaluate how well they’re doing. And when someone tries to do that, the counter is, ‘You don’t know the numbers.’”
