Wall Street Journal Quotes Eugene Volokh on Technology Companies’ Right to Ban White Supremacists

Eugene Volokh, Gary T. Schwartz Professor of Law, was quoted in a Wall Street Journal article about technology companies that have banned white supremacists from using their services after the violent rally in Charlottesville. These companies, including Uber and Airbnb, claim that they have full authority to ban any individuals with discriminatory motives. However, Volokh said that while local laws allow companies to bar customers on the basis of the customers’ race- or religious-based discrimination, among other categories, they cannot refuse customers because of their political ideology.
