Professor Sean Hecht, co-executive director of the Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, co-authored an op-ed for The Hill to argue against the National Monument Creation and Protection Act (H.R. 3990). The “misleadingly named” act would make it difficult to create new national monuments, and would authorize presidents to reduce the size of all existing monuments. According to Hecht and Ruple, the act ignores America’s conservation history designated in the Antiquities Act.
“The National Monument Creation and Protection Act in short, will neither create nor protect our national monuments, but will only undermine them,” they argued.
