Laura Gómez Speaks With KPBS About Hispanic Identity and the Law

Professor Laura E. Gómez spoke with San Diego public radio station KPBS about the history of Mexican American legal status and how it evolved in relation to Hispanic identity, the civil rights movement and other events since 1848. The second edition of her book Manifest Destinies: The Making of the Mexican American Race is now available, and its release is timely. “Nobody is arguing that we’re in a post-racial America anymore, as they were when Obama was first elected,” Gómez said. “Trump’s campaign and his presidency have really put the spotlight on divisions along racial lines.”
