She later worked at a nonprofit special education law firm, representing students with disabilities, advocating for their educational rights, and helping families resolve disputes with school districts.

Professor Wetzstein earned her B.S. from Cornell University and her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, where she served as a senior editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review. She trained as a mediator at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine Caruso School of Law and serves as a volunteer mediator with the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office Dispute Resolution Program.
